Everything bound for the Tuscan island of Giglio arrives by sea rather than by road or rail, and Giglio Porto is the single ferry gateway that handles it. Toremar and Maregiglio run the roughly one-hour crossing from Porto Santo Stefano, carrying passengers along with cars, campers and trucks on roll-on/roll-off sailings. Commercial freight is therefore limited to island resupply moved on these ferries; there are no container or bulk terminals at the quay. A channel depth of about four metres keeps traffic to small ferries and leisure craft. Shippers with genuine breakbulk or container loads use the mainland ports of Livorno and Civitavecchia.
