Where many North African ports lean on container quays, Ghazaouet earns its keep on the Almería ferry run and on fishing. Naviera Armas and Trasmediterránea operate the Spain–Algeria crossing several times a week, a 7-to-11-hour passage that also carries accompanied trucks and trailers. Historically Algeria's first fishing port, the harbour still combines fishing activity with general break-bulk cargo. Channel and quay depths of around 9–11 metres suit mid-sized RoRo and general-cargo vessels rather than large container liners. Road links through the Tlemcen wilaya serve the hinterland, while a dedicated rail connection to the berths is not confirmed. Containerised freight for western Algeria is more practically routed via Oran, leaving Ghazaouet to its ferry and RoRo niche.
