Iron ore, mineral sands, metal concentrates and silica sand make up the bulk of trade at Geraldton, the export outlet for Western Australia's Mid-West mining belt. Throughput reached about 15 million tonnes in 2020/21, of which iron ore alone accounted for roughly 10 million tonnes and grain for over 2 million tonnes bound for Asian and Middle Eastern mills. The port is run by the Mid West Ports Authority, whose Port Maximisation Project aims to lift capacity to 25 million tonnes a year by 2026 and add handling for emerging hydrogen and ammonia cargoes. Rail and road feed ore and concentrates straight to the dry-bulk conveyors, so scheduled container liner calls are minimal. Forwarders moving FCL or LCL boxes to Western Australia should route via Fremantle, while Geraldton is the natural choice for dry-bulk, mineral and project shipments.
