A maritime power since the days of its medieval republic, Genoa remains Italy's largest port and the principal gateway for the industrial north. The port system handled a record 2.82 million TEU in 2024 and pushed close to 3 million TEU in 2025. PSA Genova Pra' carries the bulk of that volume across a 1,675-metre quay and 116 hectares, with berths for 24,000-TEU vessels, complemented by the second box terminal PSA SECH. Around 1,500 reefer plugs make Genoa one of the Mediterranean's leading ports for temperature-controlled cargo. Steel, breakbulk and project shipments move alongside containers, crude oil is handled at the Multedo oil port, and the Stazione Marittima serves ferry and cruise traffic. Inland reach is being upgraded through the Terzo Valico dei Giovi high-capacity rail line toward the Alps and the Po Valley. For cargo bound for central Italy, or when capacity tightens, La Spezia, Livorno and the Vado Gateway offer workable alternatives.
