Crude oil, refined products and increasingly biofuel feedstocks are what move across Gela's quays, not boxes. The port on Sicily's south coast lives almost entirely off the adjacent Eni refinery, which since 2019 has run as a biorefinery with a processing capacity of up to 750,000 tonnes a year. Chemical tankers discharge used vegetable oil, animal fats and palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) as feedstock, while heavy crude from nearby Eni fields and refined products still cross the oil pier; the former petrochemical plants have closed. There is effectively no container, breakbulk or RoRo activity, and the breakwater-sheltered basin doubles as a port of refuge with a small marina. Customs work centres on imports of crude and biofuel feedstocks. For containers, shippers turn to Catania or the Gioia Tauro transhipment hub, with Augusta as Sicily's nearest major tanker port.
