Settled as an Ojibwe fishing site and later a small fishing and logging village in the 1930s–40s, Gargantua Harbour on Lake Superior's Ontario shore was abandoned in the 1960s after sea lamprey collapsed the fishery. Today it lies within Lake Superior Provincial Park, accessible only by boat or hiking trail, with ruined wharf timbers and a ranger cabin the only structures. It has no commercial cargo function whatsoever – no terminal, customs or scheduled shipping. For freight on Lake Superior, shippers rely on Thunder Bay for grain and dry bulk, or Sault Ste. Marie at the Soo Locks.
