Unlike its historical namesake, the warship HMS Ganges that gave the harbour its name in 1859, Ganges Harbour (CA GGS) on Salt Spring Island today serves pleasure craft rather than naval or cargo vessels. Ganges Marina and Salt Spring Marina provide moorage, fuel and services for recreational and charter boats in this natural anchorage on the island's east coast. No commercial freight or container handling takes place at Ganges itself; BC Ferries links to Salt Spring run through the separate terminals of Long Harbour, Fulford Harbour and Vesuvius Bay. Shippers requiring container, breakbulk or bulk cargo services should use the Port of Vancouver or the Tsawwassen ferry terminal on the mainland.
