Around one million tonnes of cargo and some 380 vessel calls pass through the Port of Galway each year on Ireland's Atlantic west coast. Imports are dominated by petroleum products, bitumen, dry bulk chemicals, coal, manufactured steel and fish, while exports are largely scrap metal and a little aggregate bound for the Aran Islands. Hinterland distribution runs by road, and a long-discussed expansion would add deeper berths. Forwarders needing container services or larger parcels turn to Dublin on the east coast or Cork's Ringaskiddy terminal in the south.
