Fishing boats, pleasure yachts and the occasional cruise ship set the scene at Galle, Sri Lanka's oldest natural harbour on the island's south-west coast. With a main berth of only about 8–9 m, the port cannot accommodate large freighters, and cargo handling is limited to modest general cargo while seafood forms the dominant export. Galle is the only Sri Lankan port offering marina facilities for pleasure craft and also serves as a southern base for the country's navy. For containerised or larger consignments its freight relevance is minor — the deep-water hub of Colombo and the southern port of Hambantota are the practical alternatives. The harbour is administered by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
