Gabes exists chiefly to serve southern Tunisia's petrochemical industry rather than general container trade. Built in 1974 on the Gulf of Gabès, the port is tied to the chemical estate at Ghannouche and handles mostly bulk cargo. Imports centre on sulphur and ammonia, while exports are dominated by phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilisers, alongside fuel oil, bitumen and liquid soda. In 2019 it moved around 4.22 million tonnes of cargo plus roughly 160,000 TEU, the box traffic closely linked to the adjacent plants. Dedicated berths and installations for sulphur, ammonia and acid handling shape the facility and demand careful dangerous-goods procedures. The hinterland across southern Tunisia is served by road, with most volume originating in the neighbouring industrial zone. For general container and break-bulk shipments, Radès near Tunis and Sfax are the obvious alternatives.
