Funter Bay's fishing-industry heyday ran from 1902 to 1931, when a salmon cannery here shipped canned salmon to US markets and barrelled salted salmon to Japan and Germany. During the Second World War the bay also served as an internment camp for Alaska Native Aleut residents relocated from the Aleutian Islands. No commercial freight moves through Funter Bay today; the state-maintained dock is used mainly by recreational boaters. Shippers needing container, general cargo or bulk handling should use the port of Juneau, roughly 20 kilometres away.
