JFE Steel's sprawling West Works sets the rhythm at Fukuyama, importing iron ore and coal and shipping finished steel along Japan's Seto Inland Sea, about 90 km east of Hiroshima. Dry bulk and steel products account for most of the roughly 45 million tonnes handled here each year. Public wharves add general cargo and container handling, and since 2005 the Fukuyama International Container Terminal at Berth 1 has served trade with China and South Korea for eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. Deep-water berths accommodate vessels of up to about 16 m draught and some 200,000 dwt. Road and rail links carry cargo into the Bingo region's manufacturing hinterland. For mainline deep-sea container volumes, Kobe and Hiroshima remain the practical alternatives.
