A shallow 10-kilometre channel of just 1.8 to 2 m shapes everything about Frontera, the river port at the mouth of the Grijalva in Tabasco, Mexico (formerly Puerto Álvaro Obregón). Despite the limited depth, it is one of the state's two main ports and serves above all as a supply base for Pemex's offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, being closer to them than Dos Bocas or Isla del Carmen. Large deep-sea vessels cannot navigate the canal, so traffic centres on offshore-support craft and regional commerce along the river. For forwarders, Frontera is a specialised oil-and-gas supply and regional port rather than a container gateway. Containerised and international liner cargo is handled in practice through Dos Bocas, Coatzacoalcos and Veracruz.
