Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960 after seven years of construction, the QE II Quay remains Sierra Leone's principal seaport and the freight gateway for the capital, Freetown. It sits on one of the world's largest natural harbours and concentrates almost all of the country's foreign trade. Container operations run through Freetown Terminal Ltd on berths 3–6 (originally a Bolloré concession), with a theoretical capacity of about 380,000 TEU, though actual throughput has been closer to 75,000–90,000 TEU. Bulk and break-bulk move over the Nectar Sierra Leone Bulk Terminal at berths 1 and 2. Imports clearly dominate: rice, consumer goods, building materials and project cargo mostly enter the country here, while mineral and agricultural exports are smaller in volume. The hinterland is served largely by road, with no effective freight railway, which limits reach into the interior. Customs clearance and import controls run through the National Revenue Authority and can be time-consuming in practice. Regional alternatives along the West African coast include Conakry in Guinea and Monrovia in Liberia.
