Trailers queue at the ramp while a Stena Line ro-pax loads for Gothenburg – the everyday rhythm of Frederikshavn, on the north-eastern tip of Jutland. Stena Line runs the ro-pax terminal here under a 50-year agreement, with up to six daily sailings to Gothenburg in the May–August peak and around four for the rest of the year. The port handles roughly 1.8 million passengers, 350,000 passenger cars and about 2.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. Cargo is firmly roll-on/roll-off: accompanied and unaccompanied trailers carry the bulk of freight, while lift-on/lift-off containers are handled only on request. The port also hosts Orskov Yard, a long-established repair and conversion shipyard. Stena Line, Frederikshavn municipality and the port have agreed to introduce electric-powered ro-pax ferries on the route — 200-metre vessels for up to 1,000 passengers and 3,000 lane metres of freight — a significant step toward zero-emission corridor shipping. For scheduled container-line services, Aarhus or Aalborg are the better fit, but for the Denmark–Sweden corridor Frederikshavn remains the natural gateway.
