Over 2,000 tonnes of fish are landed each year at Fiumicino, home to one of Italy's most active fishing fleets and not to be confused with Rome's airport of the same name. The port is a shallow canal harbour at the mouth of the Tiber on the Tyrrhenian Sea, with a fairway depth of just 3.4 metres that rules out large cargo vessels. In tonnage terms, refined petroleum products dominate recorded traffic at around 3.5 million tonnes a year, handled via coastal and offshore facilities rather than the narrow canal itself. Containerised and conventional general-cargo handling is effectively absent here. Since 2023 a new commercial port has been under construction to add capacity for freight and passengers in the future. For containers, RoRo and cruise traffic, nearby Civitavecchia remains the reference port for the Rome area.
