Tuna and quarried tuff once made Favignana's fortune; today ferries and hydrofoils dominate the harbour of the largest Aegadian island off western Sicily. Its 110 m and 60 m piers handle services to Trapani, Marsala and the neighbouring islands of Levanzo and Marettimo, operated by Liberty Lines, Siremar and Torre Lines. Commercial cargo is essentially limited to island resupply by roll-on/roll-off ferry from Trapani and to the local fishing fleet; there is no container or general-cargo terminal. With around one million visitors a year, passenger and vehicle traffic clearly prevails. The island has no significant hinterland of its own and depends entirely on the sea link to mainland Sicily. For international freight, customs clearance and liner services, the mainland ports of Trapani and Palermo are the relevant gateways.
