The Algarve's building-materials and agricultural exports give the small commercial port of Faro (PT FAO) its purpose. Set on the Ria Formosa lagoon and run by the APS authority (Sines and Algarve), it handles roughly 532,000 tonnes a year across about 200 vessel calls. Cement from the Cimpor plant near Loulé is the leading export, shipped to Algeria and Cape Verde, alongside stone, iron and tiles to Gibraltar, regional carob to England, and salt. The cargo quay runs about 200 m with around 7.9 m alongside, taking vessels up to roughly 120 m LOA, 6.4 m draught and 7,500 dwt, served by three cranes and a warehouse. There is no scheduled container line, so boxes and larger parcels move through Sines or Lisbon. For regional bulk and project cargo in the Algarve, however, Faro is a practical option.
