Fresh-caught fish, not freight, is the main commodity passing through Fano, a fishing and yachting port on the Adriatic coast of Italy's Marche region. Built around the canalised Albani channel, the harbour is divided into fishing, shipbuilding and leisure areas, including the 400-berth Marina dei Cesari, and still runs a wholesale fish auction. For freight forwarders it has little to offer: there are no container or general-cargo terminals, and the entrance carries only about 2.7 m of water and can be dangerous in onshore winds. Commercial activity centres on the fishing fleet and small-scale boatbuilding. For containers, customs clearance or liner cargo, the nearby deep-water port of Ancona is the practical choice.
