Once the busiest port on Cyprus, Famagusta has been closed to international shipping since the island's 1974 division, when the Republic of Cyprus declared it an illegal point of entry. Today the port on Cyprus's east coast is run by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, whose harbours lack international recognition. Vessels that call here risk being banned or fined at the recognised ports of the Republic of Cyprus and may lose insurance cover for entering the occupied zone. As a result, cargo bound for Northern Cyprus is in practice routed through Mersin in Turkey and ferried onward. Famagusta itself handles mainly breakbulk, dry cargo and ferry traffic for the northern part of the island, without regular international container lines. For legally secure imports and exports to Cyprus, Limassol in the south is the relevant gateway, while goods for the north move via Mersin.
