Built in 1770 where the River Eye meets the North Sea, Eyemouth is the most southerly commercial port on Scotland's east coast and remains, above all, a fishing harbour. A local fleet of roughly 26 vessels — from small creel boats to larger trawlers — lands whitefish and shellfish, supported by 24-hour, lock-free access to a deep-water berth. The port serves fishing, leisure and some commercial craft, but it is not set up for container lines, RoRo or routine commercial customs clearance. A masterplan envisages a new deep-water facility for offshore wind, cruise and cargo, though this is still at the planning stage. Forwarders with boxed or general cargo for the Scottish Borders should use Leith, Grangemouth or Blyth.
