Petrochemical refineries, deep-water tank terminals and ore jetties define Europoort, an industrial section of the Port of Rotterdam at the mouth of the Rhine and Meuse. Because there are no locks or tidal gates, the area handles the very largest crude carriers alongside its liquid-bulk storage. Dry-bulk flows of iron ore and coal, car terminals and breakbulk berths round out the mix, while most pure container volume is handled at the adjacent Maasvlakte. P&O Ferries operates daily RoRo freight sailings from Europoort to London/Tilbury and several sailings a week to Hull, handling accompanied and unaccompanied freight. In June 2026, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Necron Group and PTP Group agreed to develop 38 hectares of new agrifood logistics infrastructure at the Rotterdam Food Hub in Europoort, including a 500-metre quay wall and cold-storage facilities. The Porthos CO₂ transport and storage project completed its offshore pipeline in 2025 and targets permanent sequestration of industrial cluster emissions under the North Sea from 2026. Hinterland reach is exceptional via motorways, the Betuwe freight railway and inland barge links into Germany and Switzerland; from July 2026 Hannibal adds a direct rail shuttle (six trains a week) between Rail Hub Milano in Melzo and Europoort. For boxed cargo, the Maasvlakte terminals or Antwerp are the practical alternatives.
