Europa Point marks Gibraltar's southern tip and stands for anchorages and pilot boarding rather than any cargo quay. There is no freight berth at the headland itself: pilots board about 1.25 nautical miles to the south-west, while the drifting and bunker areas lie east of the point. Gibraltar's commercial value rests on bunkering — it is the Mediterranean's largest bunker port — together with ship supply and repair in the Bay of Gibraltar on the western side. Fuel is normally delivered by barge to vessels at anchor, sometimes alongside. With more than 60,000 ships passing the Strait each year, the roadstead is a busy refuelling and services stop. A new tank farm on the Western Arm, commissioned in 2025, expands bunker capacity and adds the flexibility to handle biofuels such as HVO. Container line calls and conventional breakbulk handling are effectively absent here. For boxed or larger cargo, neighbouring Algeciras across the bay is the obvious alternative.
