Some 280 miles north of San Francisco, Eureka is the only deep-water refuge along a long stretch of the Northern California coast, with no comparable harbour until Coos Bay in Oregon. Run by the Humboldt Bay Harbor District, it offers several deep-water berths and a dredged entrance able to take Panamax tonnage. Its working cargoes have traditionally been forest products, logs and petroleum, rather than containerised liner traffic. A recent channel-deepening programme and new heavy-lift berths are repositioning the harbour as a staging base for offshore wind off Northern California. Hinterland access is essentially road-only, with no through rail line inland at present. Shippers needing container services route via Oakland, while Coos Bay is the nearest alternative for bulk and project cargo.
