Some 3.5 million tons of taconite pellets moved through Escanaba in 2015 alone, back when it was the only iron-ore port on Lake Michigan, loading ore railed down from Upper Peninsula mines. That era ended with the 2016 closure of the Empire Mine and the subsequent shutdown of CN's ore dock, after roughly 165 years of shipping. The port's commercial cargo relevance today is limited. Forwarders with Lake Michigan bulk should look to Green Bay, Milwaukee or the Chicago/Indiana Harbor ports instead.
