Up to 1,500 MW of wind-turbine capacity leaves Esbjerg's quays every year, and for good reason: the Danish North Sea port has been Northern Europe's main offshore-wind installation and service base for over two decades, handling the bulk of Europe's offshore wind projects. It also remains a primary service base for Danish oil and gas. With roughly 6,000 ship calls and 4.3 million tonnes of throughput a year, Esbjerg punches well above its nominal harbour size. It is Denmark's largest RoRo port, where DFDS and Blue Water Shipping run RoRo, project and heavy-lift cargo plus a container terminal of around 235,000 TEU capacity. Road and rail tie the port into the industrial heartlands of continental Europe. For pure deep-sea container volumes, Hamburg or Bremerhaven are the obvious call; for RoRo links to Norway, Hirtshals.
