With 1,400 feet of dockage, on-dock rail and one of the Great Lakes' largest cargo-lift capacities, Erie is built for bulk, breakbulk and project cargo rather than container lines. Pennsylvania's only commercial lake port occupies the sheltered Presque Isle Bay on Lake Erie's southern shore. The terminal, run by Logistec, offers more than 15 acres of laydown space, two warehouses and immediate access to interstates I-90 and I-79. Through the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway it handles seasonal international traffic, chiefly to and from Canada, though Seaway navigation pauses for winter ice. The port is also home to one of just two 1,000-foot dry docks on the lakes, underpinning a heavy-lift and repair niche worth some $110 million a year to the region. Shippers needing containers or year-round handling should look to Cleveland or Buffalo.
