Erdemir, Turkey's largest flat-steel producer, runs Ereğli on the western Black Sea coast as its dedicated deep-water port – also known as the Erdemir Port or Er-Port. Bulk and general-cargo berths handle imported iron ore, chiefly from Brazil and Ukraine, plus coking coal, with finished flat-steel products moving out on the export side. Annual capacity is put at around 20 million tonnes, with actual throughput near 12 million tonnes across about 1,350 vessels a year. Road and rail tie it closely to the national network and to the steelworks it serves. Liner container traffic plays little part here; the port is built for industrial and bulk cargo. For containerised shipments in the western Black Sea region, the Istanbul/Ambarlı ports are the more practical choice.
