Eighteen metres of water depth put Ensted among the deepest harbours in Denmark and the Baltic – the figure that defines the site. Built from 1959 as a coal harbour for the adjacent Enstedværket power station, the terminal was designed to import around 6 million tonnes of coal a year; the plant closed in 2013 and was demolished in 2019. Since 2021 the Ensted Bulk Terminal has belonged to the Port of Aabenraa, which keeps the roughly 500 m quay in use for dry bulk, while Inter Terminals operates tank storage for liquids alongside it. A Power-to-X hydrogen plant is planned for the site. Containers and conventional liner breakbulk are not part of Ensted's profile; the focus is deep-draught bulk and liquid cargo. For such traffic on Denmark's east coast, Aabenraa town port and Fredericia are also relevant.
