Up to 700,000 TEU a year can now pass through Ensenada's container terminal, operated by Hutchison Ports (EIT), following an expansion completed in 2024 – anchoring the main Pacific port of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. The works (an investment of around 2.3 billion pesos) extended the quay to 600 m, doubled reefer plugs from 288 to 720 and added an electric Super-Post-Panamax ship-to-shore crane. Actual throughput runs below capacity: about 322,000 TEU were handled up to September 2024 (down roughly 8% year on year). Located only about 110 km south of the US border, the port serves north-western Mexico and relieves congested Southern California ports, increasingly driven by nearshoring. Alongside the container terminal it has a multipurpose terminal, a bulk terminal and a cruise terminal. Hinterland distribution is mainly by road via the highways to Tijuana and Mexicali, with little continuous rail connection. For very large container volumes or direct calls to central Mexico, shippers use the Pacific ports of Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas or the US gateway of Long Beach/Los Angeles.
