Around 1.18 million vehicles passed through Emden in 2025 (down about 4% on 2024), keeping this East-Frisian North Sea port on the river Ems as Europe's third-largest car-handling hub after Antwerp-Bruges/Zeebrugge and Bremerhaven. It is the home port for Volkswagen Group exports – VW, Audi, Porsche, Škoda and Seat – served by high-performance Ro/Ro ramps and direct rail links. Beyond cars, Emden is a long-established centre for forest products such as cellulose, paper and timber, as well as project and heavy-lift cargo. More recently it has become a base port for onshore and offshore wind-turbine components destined for the German Bight. Total throughput is around 6.3 million tonnes a year. Deep-sea container liner traffic is minimal here; for those flows shippers use Bremerhaven, Hamburg or Wilhelmshaven (JadeWeserPort). Hinterland access runs via the A31 motorway, rail and inland waterways.
