Elizabeth City is today a recreational and Intracoastal Waterway stop rather than a working cargo port. Sitting on the Pasquotank River in northeastern North Carolina, the self-styled 'Harbor of Hospitality' was a busy seaport for timber and farm goods in the 19th century, but its shallow channel (about 1.8 m), small dry dock and limited repair facilities suit pleasure craft and barges far more than commercial vessels. Container, breakbulk and bulk freight effectively bypass it. Forwarders with commercial cargo should route through the Port of Virginia (Norfolk), roughly 50 miles to the north.
