Unlike the deepwater bulk port at Jorf Lasfar 17 km to the south, El Jadida — the former Portuguese town of Mazagan — keeps a small harbour given over mainly to fishing and tourism, sheltered by two breakwaters of about 600 m. Commercial freight is marginal here, limited historically to modest shipments of sulphur, grain, fruit and vegetables. The port is administered from Jorf Lasfar, which handles Morocco's phosphate, chemical and bulk traffic. El Jadida has no meaningful container capability. For containerised or bulk cargo, Jorf Lasfar and Casablanca are the correct gateways.
