Established in 1968, the El Hamra Oil Terminal (also written Mersa el Hamra) sits on the Mediterranean coast about 120 km west of Alexandria and handles roughly half of Egypt's crude oil output. It is purely a crude-export facility: an open roadstead with a single buoy mooring (SBM) serves tankers of up to around 100,000 dwt, backed by eight storage tanks totalling some 2.76 million barrels. Crude from the Western Desert fields arrives by pipeline and is shipped out on export tankers or forwarded to domestic refineries. There is no container, breakbulk or RoRo activity here — cargo relevance is confined entirely to liquid bulk. Terminal operations have been fully automated since 2022. For containerised or conventional cargo, Alexandria and El Dekheila are the appropriate alternatives.
