A salmon saltery established at the mouth of the Egegik River in 1895 seeded today's community, a seasonal hub of commercial salmon fishing in Alaska's Bristol Bay. As a port it is very shallow, with anchorage and pier depths around 1.5–1.8 m, and is geared to the fishery and its supply rather than container, customs or liner freight. Commercial ocean and boxed cargo relevance is accordingly slight. Wider shipments route via Anchorage and the fishing centres of Dillingham and Dutch Harbor.
