Set on Moose Island in Passamaquoddy Bay, right on the US-Canada border, Eastport claims the deepest natural seaport in the continental United States, with roughly 64 ft (about 19 m) in its channel. The Estes Head terminal, completed in 1998, takes vessels up to 900 ft (around 270 m) long and specialises in breakbulk and bulk — chiefly wood pulp and forest products — moving on the order of 300,000 tons a year with a mobile harbour crane. The Eastport Port Authority runs the port, while stevedore Logistec operates the Estes Head terminal. Eastport offers no scheduled container service, so boxed cargo and regional alternatives route via Searsport (Mack Point, Maine), Portland (Maine) or Saint John, New Brunswick. For deep-draught project and forest-product cargo, however, the port remains a competitive niche option on the US East Coast.
