On the Sea of Japan coast, facing Korea, China and the Russian Far East, the East Port of Niigata is the main cargo gateway of the prefecture. The artificial East basin offers 12 m of depth and a 915 m quay, handles container ships up to the 1,000-TEU class and provides around 250,000 TEU of annual capacity, worked by two super gantry cranes and ten straddle carriers. For trans-Pacific mainline services shippers usually consolidate via Tokyo or Yokohama, while Niigata is the natural choice for Sea-of-Japan trades.
