Frozen pollock, halibut, snow crab and salmon make up most of the cargo crossing Dutch Harbor, the busiest fishing port in the United States by volume for more than two decades. Sitting on Amaknak Island in the Bering Sea, the port handled roughly 613 million pounds of fish and shellfish in 2022, worth about USD 160 million, landed by some 400 vessels. Beyond seafood, it operates the westernmost container terminal in the US — the Unalaska Marine Center — and acts as a transshipment point for cargo between the US West Coast and Pacific Rim trading partners, served by three rail cranes and around 12,000 feet of city dock. Bunker fuel is available, but scheduled container-line coverage for general freight is limited. Shippers serving mainland Alaska usually route through Anchorage, while Kodiak is the closer option for the central Gulf.
