Roughly 46 percent of all South African port traffic passes across a single facility: Pier 2 of the Durban Container Terminal, which alone accounts for about 72 percent of Durban's throughput. Since 1 January 2026 that pier has operated as the Durban Gateway Terminal, a 25-year joint venture between Transnet and Philippine operator ICTSI, backed by around R11 billion of investment and targeting a capacity rise from 2 to 2.8 million TEU, gross crane moves up from 18 to 28 an hour and ship working hour productivity from 60 to 120. Inland distribution targets the Gauteng economic region around Johannesburg via the Natcor rail corridor and the N3 motorway. Customs clearance runs through the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Forwarders still treat Durban as the regional default for containerised imports and exports, with Ngqura (Coega) near Gqeberha and Cape Town as practical fallbacks when berth queues build. Transnet National Ports Authority's longer-term plan foresees port-wide container capacity growing from 3.3 to 11.4 million TEU.
