# Dunkerque Port Ouest

**Country:** France
**Water Body:** North Sea; North Atlantic Ocean
**Harbor Size:** Medium
**Harbor Type:** Coastal (Tide Gates)
**GPS:** 51.0667, 2.3500

Unlike the more general-cargo and Ro/Ro-focused Port Est, the western basin of Dunkirk (Port Ouest) is the harbour's heavy-industrial and energy zone on the North Sea. Water depths of around 20 m allow it to handle Capesize bulk carriers and large tankers across its deep-water quays. Its deep-water ore terminal takes the roughly 7.9 million tonnes of iron ore a year feeding the ArcelorMittal steelworks, alongside liquid bulk and the LNG terminal handling 8.2 million tonnes. Container liner traffic is effectively absent here, being concentrated at the Port Est container terminal. Hinterland links run via motorway, rail and inland waterways toward northern France and the Belgian-German industrial regions. For containerised or Ro/Ro cargo, shippers use Dunkirk Port Est, Le Havre or Antwerp.
