Serving the steel, energy and manufacturing industries of northern France, Dunkirk is the country's third-largest seaport and a versatile multipurpose port on the North Sea, with around 46 million tonnes handled in 2024 (up 5% year on year). Solid bulk dominates at just over 15 million tonnes, including roughly 7.9 million tonnes of iron ore feeding the adjacent ArcelorMittal steelworks, alongside more than 12 million tonnes of liquid bulk and a strong LNG business of 8.2 million tonnes through the LNG terminal. Container handling offers capacity of about 850,000 TEU over 70 hectares, and the €303m CAP 2020 project aims to double this with a new terminal able to take the largest container ships. In Ro/Ro, the Dunkirk–Dover ferry route is a key pillar and grew around 8% in 2024. The port is also a significant entry point for fresh produce and reefer cargo. Hinterland access runs via motorways, a dense rail network and inland waterways toward northern France and the Belgian-German industrial regions. Within the EU customs union, Dunkirk connects directly to Channel and North Sea trades. Shippers needing greater container frequency or deep-sea direct calls often turn to Le Havre (HAROPA), Antwerp or Zeebrugge.
