Lobster, brown crab and langoustine make up most of what Dunbar's commercial fleet lands today, a quiet successor to the herring trade that made this East Lothian harbour one of Scotland's busiest from the 16th century onward. Sitting where the North Sea meets the mouth of the Firth of Forth, the trust port is split into three basins — the late-16th-century Old Harbour, the Victoria Harbour of 1842 and the sheltered Broad Haven. It is not equipped for containers, breakbulk or project cargo: there are no handling terminals, and a cargo-pier depth of about 4.9 m with narrow entrances caps vessel size. Road access runs via the A1 and the East Coast Main Line toward Edinburgh, roughly 23 nautical miles to the west. Forwarders moving commercial freight on the Forth rely instead on Leith, Grangemouth or Rosyth. For shippers, Dunbar is best understood as a fishing and leisure harbour with limited freight relevance.
