More than 400,000 tonnes of crude palm oil leave Dumai in an average month, making this east-Sumatra port one of Indonesia's leading gateways for CPO and its derivatives, shipped mainly to India, China and Europe. Alongside palm oil, the port handles crude oil and refined products around the Pertamina RU II refinery, plus loading installations for Chevron/Caltex crude from the Riau oil fields. Operated by state company Pelindo, Dumai combines liquid-bulk terminals with facilities for general cargo, fertiliser and a limited amount of container traffic. In total it processes over 7 million tonnes of cargo and around 6,000 vessels a year. The hinterland of Riau's oil-palm plantations is connected by road, with no significant rail link. This is primarily a liquid-bulk and palm-oil port rather than a deep-sea container hub. For larger containerised flows on Sumatra, Belawan (near Medan) is the more established option, while Dumai remains first choice for tanker cargoes.
