Taconite iron-ore pellets, low-sulfur coal and export grain make up the bulk of traffic at Duluth-Superior, the largest tonnage port on the North American Great Lakes. The port moved roughly 29.6 million short tons in 2024, led by about 19.4 million tons of taconite from the Mesabi Range (down around 10% year on year), over 5.5 million tons of coal and close to 794,000 tons of grain, with spring wheat driving exports. This is a dedicated dry- and liquid-bulk port on Lake Superior; it does not handle containerised or Ro/Ro cargo. Seaway draft limits cap vessel size at lake freighters and smaller ocean-going ships. For container and deep-sea cargo, regional shippers rail to coastal ports such as New York/New Jersey or route via Chicago.
