Carrying the UN/LOCODE HR DBV, the port of Gruž at Dubrovnik is essentially a cruise and passenger gateway rather than a commercial cargo port. Jadrolinija and other operators run car and passenger ferries from here to the Elaphiti Islands and to Korčula, Mljet and Hvar, plus an international car-ferry link to Bari in Italy of about 7.5 hours. With a cargo-pier depth of only around 3.4 m, the port is not built for modern container or general-cargo shipping. Forwarders with freight for southern Dalmatia should therefore route via Ploče (HR PLE), which has multipurpose and container terminals, or the larger Adriatic port of Rijeka. Only accompanied trailer cargo on the Bari ferry has occasional relevance here.
