Up to 18.5 million gallons of crude once sat in the tanks at Drift River, a Cook Inlet terminal in Alaska that is strictly a petroleum facility rather than a general-cargo or container port. The submerged Cook Inlet Pipeline gathers oil from production platforms on the inlet's west side, and tankers load roughly a mile offshore at the Christy Lee platform. The site is operated by the Cook Inlet Pipeline Company, a Hilcorp subsidiary. After lahar flooding from eruptions of nearby Mount Redoubt in 1989/90 and 2009, the terminal has run only on a limited basis and has been largely wound down since the mid-2010s. It handles no containers, RoRo or conventional cargo. For petroleum, forwarders use Nikiski near Kenai; for containers and general cargo, the Port of Anchorage is the nearest commercial gateway.
