P&O Ferries and DFDS keep Dover working around the clock as Europe's busiest ferry port and the UK's leading roll-on/roll-off freight gateway across the English Channel. In 2023 the port processed around 2.2 million heavy goods vehicles (+8% on 2022), carrying trade the authority values at roughly £144 billion; UK ports recorded RoRo freight units up 3% and RoRo tonnage down slightly to 20.9 million tonnes in Q4 2025. In May 2026 the port awarded contracts for a major investment programme covering ferry berths, cargo handling facilities, road infrastructure and the cruise terminal; DFDS has committed to electrifying its entire Channel fleet by 2035, with the first two fully electric ferries joining the route from 2030. Post-Brexit, GB–EU customs plus sanitary and phytosanitary controls apply at the frontier and belong in every forwarder's lead-time planning.
