Despite a maritime past built on shipping timber beams, piles and railway sleepers worldwide, Dover on Port Esperance is today an aquaculture and fishing town rather than a commercial cargo port. Some 81 km south-west of Hobart, it hosts one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest Atlantic salmon farming operations alongside a modest fishing wharf. There is no container or general-cargo terminal, and a proposed woodchip port was shelved after conflicts with salmon leases. Forwarders should route containerised and conventional cargo through Hobart, and through Bell Bay in northern Tasmania for box and bulk volumes.
