Dordrecht (NL DOR) earns its place in freight planning as the Netherlands' most inland seaport rather than as a container call: some 5.8 million tonnes of wet and dry bulk crossed its quays in 2022, 3.1 million of that in seagoing ships and 2.7 million by barge. The Port of Rotterdam Authority manages the roughly 290-hectare site — 172 hectares of it business land — split between the Krabbepolder/Zeehaven area in the south and Louterbloemen/Duivelseiland. Cargo runs to dry and liquid bulk, breakbulk, steel and project or heavy-lift consignments; there is no mainline container service, though a container terminal is planned at the PWA quay to move volumes from road to water. Maritime manufacturing and shipbuilding around Duivelseiland and the Mallegat form the port's second pillar. Barge, road and rail connect it along the Rotterdam–Breda–Tilburg–Venlo axis, with Rotterdam about 20 km away and Antwerp roughly 85 km. As an EU port, customs entry, bonded warehousing and transit procedures run through Dutch Douane in the same way as elsewhere in the Rotterdam complex. Deep-sea containers and large volumes belong in Rotterdam; for short-sea traffic to the UK and Scandinavia, Moerdijk is a practical alternative nearby.
