For landlocked Ethiopia, Doraleh is effectively the country's coastline – its primary maritime access point on the Gulf of Aden. In 2024 the terminal handled 1.24 million TEU, breaking the one-million barrier for the first time, and it sits beside the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, through which around 15% of global maritime traffic passes. Operated by the Doraleh Container Terminal Management Company (SGTD), capacity stands near 1.6 million TEU and is planned to grow to 3.5 million TEU by 2030, with ten new RTG cranes delivered in 2025. Beyond serving Ethiopia, Doraleh acts as a growing transshipment hub for the wider Horn of Africa. Inland cargo moves on the electrified standard-gauge Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway corridor and a parallel road link. For containers, reefers and consolidated shipments to Ethiopia, this is the decisive call. Bulk, breakbulk and RoRo are handled at the adjacent Doraleh Multipurpose Port, while Berbera in Somaliland is emerging as an alternative corridor.
